Extensions: Managing Permit Extensions
A permit extension request must be submitted prior to the expiration date. To complete the request through MiEHDWIS, the Certifier is asked to confirm that the project parameters have not changed. The extension request is assigned to the District Engineer (DE) for review.
Extension requests submitted outside of MiEHDWIS must be transitioned manually by the DE, as soon as possible, to avoid the Activity automatically transitioning to Closed/Lapsed.
Important: Do not transition manually using the Past Expiration Date---this is a workflow step for addressing the passing of the expiration date.
The permit will not automatically expire while the extension request is assigned to EGLE for review. It will expire if EGLE denies the extension request after the expiration date. A notification will be sent to the DE 3 days prior to and once the expiration date passes while the extension request is still under review.
If technical concerns arise, it is recommended to consult a Professional Engineer (PE) or the original permit Issuer, if available, prior to accepting the request.
If acceptable, the DE approves the extension request, and the activity status returns to Active. A new permit document is automatically generated and made externally visible. The new expiration date is two years from the date of approval.
If the request is unacceptable, the DE denies the extension request. If denied prior to the expiration date, the activity status will return to Active, and the original expiration date will remain. If denied after the expiration date, the activity status will transition to Closed with a Lapsed resolution.
A permit that expires cannot be transitioned back to Active. Any project with an expired permit that has not commenced construction, and the supply wishes to pursue, must submit a new permit application for approval prior to construction. If the DE is made aware that this is a resubmitted project, it is recommended to link the new permit activity (child) to the original permit activity (parent) and include a note on the original permit for internal documentation purposes.
