What does it mean to be a Subject Matter Expert (SME)?

An SME is an individual with a deep understanding of a job. This can include knowing the processes, technology, and other job functions.

As a Subject Matter Expert, the primary role is to lend your business expertise by doing the following:

  • Represent your program area needs and provide expertise.

  • Provide feedback to KL&A and the project team.

  • Answer and ask questions related to your program area.

  • Bring information about MiEHDWIS back to your unit or section.

  • Consider process improvements, communicate current pain points, and support Agile principles.

  • Provide decisions for your program area. Collaborate with others.

  • Perform user acceptance testing and report bugs in Jira.

  • Provide input on the creating of training materials for SOPs.

  • Serve as the ‘go-to’ for your peers pre- and post-implementation.
